Deep Dive
1. Purpose & Value Proposition
Acurast aims to decentralize cloud computing by creating a global marketplace for compute power. It addresses reliance on centralized providers like Amazon Web Services by enabling anyone with a smartphone to contribute idle processing resources. Developers pay to run verifiable, confidential workloads—such as AI inference or data processing—on this distributed network, while device owners earn rewards. This model seeks to make computing more accessible, cost-effective, and resilient.
2. Technology & Architecture
The network is built as a Substrate-based Polkadot parachain, providing interoperability and shared security. Its core innovation is using smartphones equipped with Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs)—secure hardware enclaves present in modern processors. These TEEs allow computations to be performed confidentially; neither the device owner nor the network can see the actual data, only the verified result. This enables a trustless, decentralized cloud. The upcoming "Milestone Cray" upgrade will allow devices to cluster, pooling resources for more demanding tasks (Finbold).
3. Token Utility & Ecosystem
The ACU token is the economic engine of the Acurast network (Token | Acurast Docs). Its primary utilities are:
- Payment for Compute: Developers spend ACU to deploy and run applications.
- Staking & Rewards: Processors (device owners) stake ACU to provide economic security and earn rewards for completed jobs. Validators (collators) are also rewarded in ACU.
- Network Fees: ACU is used for transaction fees on the native Acurast chain.
The token is multichain, natively issued on the Acurast parachain and bridged to Ethereum, BSC, Base, and Peaq for broader accessibility.
Conclusion
Acurast is fundamentally a decentralized compute protocol that coordinates a global network of smartphones to create a permissionless, secure cloud infrastructure, powered by its ACU token. Can its unique smartphone-based supply model achieve the scale needed to compete with traditional cloud services?
